Fue escritora, poeta, musicóloga y miembro del Partido Comunista de Gran Bretaña. Con su novela, Lolly Willowes (1926), alcanzó un notable éxito. Escribió además siete libros de poesía y numerosos relatos que están recogidos en catorce volúmenes. Está considerada una de las escritoras inglesas más importantes del siglo xx.
