Elizabeth Peters es el seudónimo de Barbara G. Mertz. Nació en Canton, Illinois, en 1927, un pueblo muy pequeño donde pasó sus primeros años. Más tarde la familia se trasladó a Chicago. Estudió historia, literatura inglesa y escritura creativa. Quería ser arqueóloga e ingresó en el Oriental Institute de la Universidad de Chicago donde se licenció en 1950. Se doctoró en egiptología en 1952, con 25 años.
En 1950 se casó con Richard Mertz, aparcó su carrera y se dedicó a cuidar a sus hijos Elizabeth y Peter. Se divorció en 1969. En 1964 y 1966 publicó dos ensayos sobre egiptología y finalmente consiguió su sueño, publicar un libro de misterio "The Master of Blacktower" en 1966 con el seudónimo de Barbara Michaels. Utilizó este nombre para escribir thrillers con elementos sobrenaturales. En 1972 creó el seudónimo de Elizabeth Peters a partir del nombre de sus dos hijos para escribir novelas de misterio. La primera obra de la serie de Amelia Peabody fue "Crocodile on the Sandbank" que se publicó en 1975.
Murió en Maryland en 2013.
