Readings to start with

Hello! I would like to read in English but I am not sure what to read. I would prefer something easy because I am not used to reading anything in this language. What would you recomend? Kisses.

I'm not an expert in English Litterature, but I can speak with experience... For my first English book I choose "Shopaholic and sister" Beach-literature, easy writting and clear ideas....
Or maybe with a level-read?

Well, it obviously depends on what kinds of books you like. But if you want to make sure it doesn't get too difficult, you could always start with some children's books. "Awful End" by Philip Ardagh, for example, it's quite funny.

There are lots of graded readers for students of English. Go to any good bookshop and choose.

For those people who are not used to reading in English I would recommend all Wilde´s plays; they are really easy to understand.

Also I would recommend Chomsky´s books, Graham Green´s novels.

Take care not to insert in the sentence two negative words; in this case it would be "I wouldn´t ever think..."

On the other hand I think the sentence would be some better like that:

I wouldn´t ever have tought they...

Some months ago I read "Hegemony or survival" and it does no represent any difficulty.

If you want to read something really... strange..., try "Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town" by Cory Doctorow. (His books are also available for free download on his website http://www.craphound.com, by the way.)


I also love the books by James Harriot, about the life a veterinarian in Yorkshire, they are really funny and have a certain charm.

A book that I loooove as a pastime is "father ted, the scripts". These are the original script for the irish show under the same name and it's about three priests who live in Craggy Island, it's hilarious! you can also watch the episodes of course........but I find the scripts even funnier...........

Hace tiempo atrás me llegó el dato de un libro que me parece sumamente interesante. El asunto es que está en inglés y al parecer no se tradujo, pues no encontré una traducción.

Entonces dije: ¿Por qué no lo leo en inglés?
Lo intenté, pero reboté dramáticamente.. jajaja. A pesar de que tengo la facilidad de usar un libro que tiene diccionario, y simplemente moviendo el cursor a una palabra que no entiendo, de inmediato, en una ventanita me da el significado o la traducción...
El asunto es que fui avanzando muy lentamente, pero hubo frases que me fue imposible entender, ni siquiera consultando el significado de cada una de las palabras, y sus posibles acepciones.
Recuerdo que en una de esas frases me ocupé bastante rato, tratando de entender, y como un rompecabezas busqué qué acepción podría aplicarse cada palabra........

Entonces comprendí que mi nivel de inglés es insuficiente para leer un libro.

Pero se me ocurrió una estrategia diferente: Dejé pendiente este libro y el siguiente libro a leer lo busque en inglés, y (en otro libro) la traducción al castellano.

Me puse a leer en inglés (siempre con la ayuda del diccionario). Y cuando llegaba a esos lugares en que no entiendo, pasaba al libro en castellano. y leía esa parte, para luego regresar nuevamente al inglés.
Por suerte tengo un libro que permite pasar de un libro a otro con la misma rapidez que pasar de página.

Justo ayer terminé de leer el libro. Tardé bastante más de lo normal, pero aprendí mucho de inglés, y cada vez necesito un poco menos acudir a la traducción, y también cada vez un poco menos acudir al diccionario.
Sin embargo, creo que todavía no podré con el primero que lo tengo sólo en inglés.
Entonces estoy comenzando mi segundo libro en inglés, del que tengo también a mano la traducción...

A ver si cuando lo termine ya esté preparado para avanzar sólo en inglés, o quizá necesite leer un tercer libro de esta forma primero...

Será que la técnica de aprendizaje de inglés que estoy usando es eficiente?

Hablo en castellano que sino no me aclaro.

Bueno me ha parecido que no hay un mensaje sobre esto exactamente y lo añado. En la biblioteca de mi ciudad hay la tira de libros en ingles y he encontrado una parte concreta de penguin readers que ahora mismo no me atrevo a cogerme un libro mas largo de 100 pagina porque me cuesta bastante leerlo.

En la universidad me todo concretamente Sherlock Holmes Short Stories de la editorial peguin readers. Level 5 (2300 headwors Upper-Intermediate y me entere bastante bien)

Ahora voluntariamente me he cogido de Jhon Grisham The Testament y lo malo que es level 6 y haber si me aclaro.

Pues lo dicho el post es principalmente para que hablemos de todos estos libros.
