Biografías y vidasEscritor danés. Inscrita en el romanticismo, su obra comprende diversos libros de poemas, novelas y piezas para el teatro; sin embargo, Hans Christian Andersen debe su celebridad a las magníficas colecciones de cuentos de hadas que publicó entre 1835 y 1872. Son creaciones suyas relatos como El patito feo, La sirenita, El soldadito de plomo, El sastrecillo valiente o La reina de las nieves, tan divulgados y conocidos que a veces son tenidos por cuentos tradicionales anónimos. Por su poderosa inventiva y la equilibrada sencillez de su estilo y de su técnica narrativa, Andersen es el primer gran clásico de la literatura infantil.
El más famoso de los escritores románticos daneses fue un hombre de origen humilde y formación esencialmente autodidacta, en quien influyeron poderosamente las lecturas de Goethe, Schiller y E.T.A. Hoffmann. Tuvo una primera niñez bastante serena entre un padre zapatero, soñador inquieto y librepensador, y una madre más vieja que su marido, supersticiosa y activa, siempre dispuesta a mimar a su hijo; tal equilibrio quedó alterado con la muerte del padre (1816), a quien el espejismo de la guerra napoleónica había alejado de la familia, y el segundo matrimonio de la madre.
En 1819, a los catorce años, Hans Christian Andersen viajó a Copenhague en busca de fortuna. En vano esperó llegar a ser cantante, actor o por lo menos bailarín, ni tampoco fueron más afortunadas sus primeras tentativas poéticas. La crisis que vivía el reino de Dinamarca a raíz de las duras condiciones del tratado de paz de Kiel y su escasa formación intelectual obstaculizaron seriamente su propósito.
Sin embargo, con la ayuda de personas adineradas (especialmente del director teatral Jonas Collin, que medió para que se le concediese una beca), logró cursar estudios regulares, y en 1828 obtuvo el título de bachiller. Un año antes se había dado a conocer con su poema El niño moribundo, que reflejaba el tono romántico de los grandes poetas de la época, en especial los alemanes. En esta misma línea se desarrollaron su producción poética y sus epigramas, en los que prevalecía la exaltación sentimental y patriótica.
En 1830, durante un viaje, pasó la experiencia de su primer amor, desdichado como los dos que siguieron (por Luisa Collin, la hija de su protector, y por la soprano Jenny Lind, el famoso "ruiseñor del Norte"). Entre las numerosas composiciones de este período cabe destacar Caminata desde el canal de Holmen hasta la punta oriental de Amager, el vodevil Amor en la torre de San Nicolás y las recopilaciones de versos Poemas (1830), Fantasías y esbozos (1831), Cuadros de viaje por el Harz, Suiza, Sajonia, etc., en el verano de 1831 y el ciclo poético Los doce meses del año.
El escaso éxito de sus obras teatrales y su insaciable curiosidad lo impulsaron a viajar por Europa. En los años 1833 y 1834 estuvo en Francia y en Italia, principalmente en París (donde escribió Inés y el tritón) y en Roma; posteriormente, ya famoso gracias a sus cuentos, visitaría Alemania, Grecia, Turquía, Suecia, España y el Reino Unido, entre otros países, y anotaría sus impresiones en interesantes cuadernos y libros de viaje: Bazar de un poeta (1842), En Suecia (1851), España (1863) y Visita a Portugal (1866).
En 1835, de regreso tras su primer viaje, alcanzó cierta fama con la publicación de su novela El improvisador. Además de los cuentos, son dignas de recuerdo las novelas O.T. (1837), Tan sólo un violinista (1837), Las dos baronesas (1848), Ser o no ser (1857) y Pedro el afortunado (1870), todas de inspiración más o menos autobiográfica, y piezas teatrales como El mulato (1840). Interpretó su propia vida como un bello cuento en sus repetidas autobiografías: El libro de la vida (1832-33), El cuento de mi vida (1846) y Mit Livs Eventyr (1855), reelaboración danesa de la anterior, a la que siguió un apéndice en los años 1868-69.
Los cuentos de Andersen
Durante una estancia en el Reino Unido, Andersen había entablado amistad con Charles Dickens, cuyo poderoso realismo, al parecer, fue uno de los factores que le ayudaron a encontrar el equilibrio entre realidad y fantasía, en un estilo que hallaría su más lograda expresión en una larga serie de cuentos. Al regreso de su primer viaje a Italia, que tuvo la virtud de estimular su fértil imaginación, Andersen preparó y publicó Cuentos para contar a los niños (Eventyr, fortalte for børn, 1835), primero de sus famosísimos libros de cuentos infantiles; nuevas colecciones suyas verían la luz en años sucesivos (1843, 1847, 1852); la última de ellas fue Nuevos cuentos e historias (Nye eventyr og historier, 1858-1872).
Inspirándose en tradiciones populares y narraciones mitológicas extraídas de fuentes alemanas y griegas, así como en experiencias particulares, Hans Christian Andersen llegaría a escribir, entre 1835 y 1872, un total de 168 cuentos protagonizados por personajes de la vida diaria, héroes míticos, animales y objetos animados. Parte de ellos son cuentos populares que el autor había oído contar en su infancia en Odense y que reproduce con tonos sencillos de gusto popular y, al mismo tiempo, estilísticamente refinados (por ejemplo, El eslabón, El pequeño y el gran Claus, Los cisnes silvestres o El porquero). Otros, como Ole Luköje y La colina de los elfos, están tomados de leyendas; y algunos, como El vestido nuevo del emperador, proceden de fuentes literarias.
Con todo, la mayor parte de las historias son pura invención de Andersen, hecho en que el danés se aparta de la línea de autores que reelaboraron cuentos tradicionales (como el francés Charles Perrault en el siglo XVII) o se limitaron a transcribirlos y compilarlos buscando preservar su pureza y espontaneidad originales (como los hermanos Grimm). Andersen reveló una poderosa fantasía al convertir incluso a seres inanimados en protagonistas de sus narraciones, como ocurre en El soldadito de plomo, El molino de viento, El farol viejo o El collar. Animales y también plantas son personajes habituales (El ruiseñor, El sapo, El patito feo, La mariposa, La margarita, El abeto o El último sueño de la vieja encina), sin que falten por ello los protagonistas humanos, como en Pulgarcita o El sastrecillo valiente.
La maestría y la sencillez expositiva logradas por Andersen en sus cuentos no sólo contribuyeron a su rápida popularización, sino que consagraron a su autor como uno de los grandes genios de la literatura universal. Dirigidas en principio al público infantil, aunque admiten sin duda la lectura a otros niveles, las narraciones de Andersen se desarrollan en un escenario donde la fantasía forma parte natural de la realidad y las peripecias del mundo se reflejan en historias que, no exentas de un peculiar sentido del humor, tratan de los sentimientos y el espíritu humanos.
Valiéndose de elementos fabulosos o reales y autobiográficos, como en el cuento El patito feo, el escritor danés identificó sus personajes con valores, vicios y virtudes para describir la eterna lucha entre el bien y el mal y dar fe del imperio de la justicia, de la supremacía del amor sobre el odio y de la persuasión sobre la fuerza; en sus relatos, los personajes más desvalidos se someten pacientemente a su destino hasta que el cielo, en forma de héroe, hada madrina u otro ser fabuloso, acude en su ayuda y premia su virtud.
