Escritor en lengua yiddish, uno de los grandes autores de esta lengua y también de los más prolíficos. A los diecinueve años se trasladó a Varsovia, donde en 1904 publicó una colección de prosas líricas en yiddish: Dos Shtell. Después se dedicó al teatro, escribiendo varios dramas, entre los que se cuentan Moshiatts Tsatyn (1906) y Der Got vun Nekome (1907), puesto en escena en Berlín por Max Reinhardt.
Un rasgo singular de su producción es que subraya con frecuencia la común tradición cristiana y judía, lo que trasciende sus ficciones convirtiendo su obra en una compleja estructura de pensamiento filosófico y espiritual. Entre sus novelas destacan Motke el ladrón (1916), América (1918), la trilogía compuesta por San Petersburgo, Varsovia y Moscú (también traducida como Tres ciudades, 1929-1931) y El canto del valle (1938). En los ambientes judíos causaron sorpresa y alarma algunos de sus títulos de "inspiración cristiana", tales como El nazareno (1939), El apóstol, (1943) o María (1949).
