Destacada escritora modernista de origen neozelandés.

Fue enviada a Londres a estudiar junto a dos hermanas suyas en 1903, al tiempo en que mejoraba su práctica con el violonchelo, ya que su vocación inicial era la de concertista. Volvió a su ciudad natal, y en 1908 marchó de nuevo a Londres, huyendo de la vida “pueblerina” de Wellington. En Londres vivió una vida bohemia mientras comenzaba a escribir relatos cortos, como lo haría el resto de su vida, que fue agitadísima desde el punto de vista sentimental, con relaciones lesbianas y heterosexuales, pero muy productiva literariamente. Enferma de tuberculosis, viajó a Alemania y Francia buscando cura, muriendo en este último país.
